Topic 6
Trigonometric Substitution
A root like becomes one trig function when you set , because . Tangent does the same for , and secant for . Integrate in , then use a right triangle to write the answer in .
4 kinds of question. Open the one you are stuck on.
1Choose the right trig substitution for a square root
e.g. “Choose the substitution that is most beneficial for evaluating the integral”
Choose the right trig substitution for a square root
e.g. “Choose the substitution that is most beneficial for evaluating the integral”- 1Write the inside as , or
, so and . With an term, complete the square first.
- 2Match it: sine, tangent or secant
: . : . : .
- 3Solve for and check the root simplifies
, , .
Remember: a² minus: sine. Plus: tangent. Minus a²: secant.

, so
Common mistakes3
- Forgetting the coefficient: for use , not .
- Mixing up (sine) and (secant): look at which term carries the minus.
- Using trig substitution when a plain one works: needs only .
2Evaluate an integral using trigonometric substitution
e.g. “Evaluate , or ”
Evaluate an integral using trigonometric substitution
e.g. “Evaluate , or ”- 1Substitute and ; simplify the root
gives and . In the usual range of , the root needs no absolute value. The one exception is secant with , where .
- 2Integrate in
It is now a trig integral: odd power, double angle, or .
- 3Draw a right triangle from the substitution
: opposite , hypotenuse , adjacent . For a definite integral, convert the limits to instead.
- 4Write the answer in , or evaluate at the limits
Remember: Substitute, integrate, triangle, back to x.

- Leaving in the answer: expand it to , then read both off the triangle.
- Changing to limits and substituting back: do one or the other.
- Writing when inverse trig is banned: read off the triangle.
3Complete the square before a trig substitution
e.g. “a root of a quadratic with an term: , ”
Complete the square before a trig substitution
e.g. “a root of a quadratic with an term: , ”- 1Complete the square under the root
. With , factor out the minus first.
- 2Let be the shifted variable and match the form
