Topic 16
Limits of Sequences
A sequence converges if settles on one number as . Otherwise it diverges. Most limits need one of five moves: divide by the , squeeze, use l'Hôpital on , multiply by the , or find the of a recursion.
5 kinds of question. Open the one you are stuck on.

Diverges to
Common mistakes3
- Stopping at and calling it .
- Thinking beats . Any exponential with base above beats any power.
- Saying a limit of "converges". A sequence that goes to diverges.
2Find the limit of a sequence using the squeeze theorem
e.g. “, or on top, something that grows on the bottom”
Find the limit of a sequence using the squeeze theorem

Common mistakes2
- Using limit laws on : it has no limit, so "" is not allowed.
- Bounds with different limits prove nothing: does not give a limit.
3Find the limit of a sequence using l'Hôpital's rule
e.g. “Logs, exponentials and powers mixed: , ”
Find the limit of a sequence using l'Hôpital's rule
e.g. “Logs, exponentials and powers mixed: , ”- 1Write for a function of real
l'Hôpital needs derivatives, so it works on , not on itself.
- 2Get a or fraction
For a power (, , ), take first: , then write it as a fraction.
- 3Differentiate top and bottom; repeat if still indeterminate
- 4Undo the log if you took one; conclude
If , then .

No: it diverges to , even though solves
Common mistakes2
- Solving and stopping. That only says what the limit would be if it exists.
- Ignoring the first term: the same recursion can converge from one start and diverge from another.
