KPU MATH 1102: Precalculus Algebra

KPU MATH 1102 course card for Precalculus Algebra. The parabola y = x² and the cubic y = x³ are graphed together, beside the quadratic formula, the difference-of-squares and binomial-square identities, and a curve with its roots marked x₁, x₂ and x₃.

MATH 1102 is where a lot of Kwantlen students actually begin. If your placement put you below the pre-calculus level, or if Pre-Calculus 11 was a while ago and did not go well, this is the course that gets you back on the pathway — and it is a real university course, not a remedial detour. Students who take it seriously tend to find that the calculus two terms later is easier than it was for classmates who arrived with a thin Grade 12 pass.

What is covered in KPU MATH 1102?

KPU describes MATH 1102 as developing the computational skills and conceptual understanding of algebra, functions and graphs needed to proceed to more advanced mathematical thinking, through the study of equations, inequalities, graphs, functions, right-angle trigonometry, and applications to problem solving. Concretely:

  • Algebraic technique: exponent laws, factoring, rational expressions, and radicals done accurately and quickly
  • Equations: linear, quadratic — by factoring, completing the square and the quadratic formula — rational and radical equations, and the extraneous solutions the last two produce
  • Inequalities: linear, quadratic and rational, including absolute value, and expressing solutions in interval notation
  • The coordinate plane: distance, midpoint, slope, lines and circles
  • Functions: notation, domain and range, evaluation, composition, and reading a graph as a function
  • Graphs of the basic families: lines, parabolas, polynomials and their behaviour at the ends and at their roots
  • Right-angle trigonometry: the ratios, solving triangles, and applied angle-of-elevation problems
  • Applications: word problems where the work is translating English into an equation

Three credits. One detail worth knowing before you register: KPU lists MATH 1102 with the ASTR attribute but not QUAN, so it counts toward an associate degree but does not by itself satisfy a quantitative program requirement. MATH 1112, the next course up, carries both.

Who MATH 1102 is for, and where it leads

The prerequisite is Level E1 in KPU's Math Alternatives Table: Pre-Calculus 11 with a C, Foundations of Mathematics 11 with a C+, the IB equivalents KPU lists, a Math Placement Test score of 46 or higher, or MATQ 1089 with a C+.

Passing MATH 1102 with a C meets Level C1, which is what MATH 1112 requires. That is the pathway:

MATH 1102 → MATH 1112 → MATH 1120 → MATH 1220

Two preparation courses, then two calculus courses. It is four terms rather than two, and for a student whose algebra is genuinely shaky it is the faster route, because the alternative — starting a calculus course underprepared — usually costs a repeat.

MATH 1102 does not lead directly into any calculus course. If someone has told you it does, check your program map before you register.

Common challenges students face in MATH 1102

The material is familiar, the standard is not

Most of these topics appeared in Grade 10 and 11. What is different is the expected accuracy and speed: a sign error that would have cost a mark in high school costs the whole question here, and there is no time to check everything twice.

Factoring is slow rather than wrong

Students who can factor but have to think about it lose disproportionate time on every assessment, because factoring is a step inside larger problems rather than a problem in itself. Fluency, not capability, is the target.

Inequalities behave differently from equations

Dividing by a negative flips the sign; a rational inequality cannot be cross-multiplied; the solution is a set, not a number. Each of these is a small rule, and together they cause more lost marks in MATH 1102 than anything else.

Word problems stall at the first line

The algebra is usually within reach. Deciding what x stands for and writing the first equation is where students stop — and that is the part the course is actually training.

Right-angle trigonometry is left to the end and rushed

It often arrives late in the term, when everyone is tired, and it gets less practice than it needs. It is also the foundation for the trigonometry in MATH 1112, which is where that course gets hard.

How Learn4Less helps you succeed in MATH 1102

We diagnose before we teach

Difficulty in MATH 1102 is almost always traceable to two or three specific gaps rather than to the whole subject. We find them in the first session so the work goes where it pays.

We build speed, not just correctness

Timed practice on the mechanical skills — factoring, exponent laws, clearing fractions — until they stop consuming attention. That is what makes room for the thinking on an exam.

We work on setting up word problems

Naming the unknown, translating each clause into symbols, and checking the finished equation says what the paragraph said. It is a teachable procedure, not a knack.

We treat this as preparation, because it is

Some topics here matter enormously later and some matter less. We say which, so your study time goes to the parts MATH 1112 and MATH 1120 will lean on.

MATH 1102 exam and midterm preparation

Timed practice with unseen questions

Assessment formats vary between sections, so your course outline is the authority on weighting. What we can do is make sure you have solved unfamiliar problems under time pressure before the exam does it to you.

KPU's sample finals

The KPU library holds sample finals on course reserve — use the course reserves tab and search by instructor. KPU notes that the real exam may differ markedly, which is true, but the style and scope are still useful, and they are free.

Killing the recurring errors

Most students lose marks to the same three or four mistakes all term: a dropped negative, an un-flipped inequality, an extraneous root left in the answer, a domain restriction ignored. Naming yours is usually worth more than another chapter of practice.

Knowing the grade you need

If MATH 1112 is next, a C is the requirement. Aim above it — the next course moves faster and assumes this material is automatic.

Why choose Learn4Less for MATH 1102 tutoring?

Foundations are not a lesser subject to us

We tutor Pre-Calculus 11 and Pre-Calculus 12 every term alongside university calculus, and we know exactly which weaknesses at this level cause trouble two courses later.

No embarrassment, ever

Plenty of capable people arrive at university with gaps in their algebra — usually because of a disrupted year, a language change or a long gap since school, not because of ability. Sessions start from where you are.

Online anywhere, in person in Vancouver

Sessions run online across Canada and the United States, with screen sharing and live work on the same page. In-person tutoring is available in the Vancouver area subject to tutor availability.

Free resources between sessions

Our concept reviews and calculators are open to everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does MATH 1102 count toward my degree?

It is a three-credit undergraduate course and KPU gives it the ASTR attribute, so it counts toward an associate degree. It does not carry the QUAN attribute, so it does not on its own satisfy a quantitative program requirement — MATH 1112 does. Check your program's requirements, and ask an academic advisor if the wording is ambiguous.

Can I go straight from MATH 1102 to MATH 1120?

No. MATH 1102 with a C meets Level C1, and MATH 1120 requires Level A1. MATH 1112 is the course in between, and passing it with a C meets Level A1.

What is the difference between MATH 1102 and MATH 1112?

Level and scope. MATH 1102 is entered from Pre-Calculus 11 and covers algebra, equations, inequalities, graphs, functions and right-angle trigonometry. MATH 1112 is entered from Pre-Calculus 12 and covers the full set of function families — polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric — as preparation specifically for calculus.

Should I take the Math Placement Test instead of MATH 1102?

It is worth attempting if you think your transcript understates you: 61 or higher on the Math Placement Test meets Level C1 and puts you straight into MATH 1112. If the algebra itself is the problem rather than the paperwork, take the course — skipping into a class that assumes fluency you do not have is how students lose a year.

I have not done math in several years. Is this the right starting point?

Usually yes, provided you meet Level E1. It is the lowest MATH-level course on the calculus pathway, and it is designed to rebuild exactly the skills that fade. If you are below Level E1, KPU's MATQ courses come first — an academic advisor can confirm your placement.
