How to Handle Math Problems When You Forget Key Formulas

Example: Completing the Square to Recover the Quadratic Formula

Suppose you have 2x² + 3x – 5 = 0 and can’t recall the quadratic formula. Write:

Now complete the square:

x² + (3/2)x + (3/4)² = 5/2 + (3/4)² x + (3/4) = ±√[5/2 + 9/16] And so on. You’re reconstructing the formula step by step.

Use Related Formulas or Logic

Sometimes, you remember a similar formula, or part of what you need. For example:

  • You forget the formula for the sum of an arithmetic series, but you know the formula for the nth term. You can write out a few terms and look for a pattern or try to derive the sum formula.
  • You can’t recall the double angle formula for cosine, but you remember cos²θ + sin²θ = 1 and the addition formula for cosine. You can substitute or manipulate these to get what you need.

This approach relies on connections between formulas. Math is full of these links, and using them is not “cheating”—it’s exactly how many formulas are derived in the first place.

Estimate or Bound the Answer

If you’re truly stuck, think about what a reasonable answer would look like. For example:

  • If you need the area of a circle with radius 2, but blank on the formula, remember that the area should be more than 2² = 4 (since a square with side 2 has area 4) but less than 4π (since π > 3). You can write, “Area = k·r², where k ≈ 3.14.”
  • For a sum, try adding the first few terms to see the trend.

On exams, showing that you can estimate sensibly can earn you some credit and shows mathematical maturity.

Write Down What You Do Know

Never leave the answer blank. Instead, write down:

  • The general type of formula you’re looking for (e.g., “I need the formula for the area of a sector of a circle.”)
  • The variables and what they represent
  • Any relevant relationships you do remember

This gives your instructor something to award partial credit for, and it helps organize your thoughts—sometimes jogging your memory as you write.

Know When to Move On

  1. Confusing Similar Formulas: It’s easy to mix up, for example, the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle, or the sum of arithmetic vs. geometric series.
